Magnifying the Royal BC Museum Experience

Ever wanted to know who’s who in our Natural History department and what they do? Curious to see collections that have never before been on public display? Want to know how and why we create some amazing things here at the
Royal BC Museum?

Well, now’s your chance. We welcome you to
Royal BC Museum: Behind the Scenes,
a groundbreaking 929-square-metre
(10,000-square-foot) exhibition
, year-long schedule of activities and virtual exhibition that will bring you up close and personal.

We want to show you what we’re working on when no one else is looking. In celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity, let us introduce you to curators and collection managers. Step into the shoes of our skilled professionals and see what “a day in the life” is like.
This exciting exhibition promises something for every member of the family. Young explorers will meet Piper the Pika, our exhibition mascot. Piper’s just busting to lead kids on a trail of discovery and exploration! There’s even an AmusEum – a special zone of exploration just for kids! And be sure to visit Aliens Among Us, an exhibition within an exhibition that’s all about the non-indigenous plants and animals that have decided to call BC home.
This Alien Among Us, the American Bullfrog
(Rana catesbeiana), was brought to BC by aspiring frog farmers.

For a truly unforgettable experience, grab your Backstage Pass and come along on a real-time tour of our collections areas. Our optional half-hour tours are available by signup, and will take you through that mysterious zone of creation – our Exhibition Arts area – before heading out to investigate our collections more deeply. Can’t you just feel your spine tingling? Find more information about the tour and other activities here. And click here for pictures of Behind the Scenes. It’s all part of helping you get to know us better. Because what we do behind the scenes is so cool, we’ve just got to share.

Check back regularly for more information about the Royal BC Museum: Behind the Scenes exhibition. We’ll be adding events, activities and details to this website  – with even more to come over the fall and winter!

Did you know?
About a dozen species of lady beetles are aliens to Canada. Some of these were introduced to help control aphids and other similar insects.
