Conservation

Conservation Services is responsible for the care and preservation of the Royal BC Museum collections. We monitor the relative humidity, temperature, lighting, and atmospheric pollutants to ensure that artifacts and specimens are protected from deterioration. Our conservators lend expertise across disciplines, providing such services as materials analysis, exhibit planning (including consultations on lighting, ventilation, physical security, mounts, installation and gallery maintenance), and public programs and events coordination as they relate to collections. We record the condition of collections for acquisition, loans, exhibits and deaccession and perform professional conservation treatments when necessary. Conservation staff are also responsible for responding to disasters by planning emergency preparedness procedures and supplies, organizing collection recovery and performing subsequent treatments.
