Canadian Natural Heritage
This Project was a cooperative effort between the
Royal British Columbia Museum, the Canadian Heritage Information Network,
British Columbia Museums Association, Okanagan University College
and the Friends of the Royal British Columbia Museum.
This World Wide Web site explores the endangered species of a
unique ecosystem in Canada. It provides world-wide access to museum
information, digitized pictures and maps, plus lesson plans compatible
with the high school curriculum. The Project focuses on the Thompson-Okanagan
region of British Columbia. This region's environment is unique
to all of Canada. More than 90 species that occur there occur no
where else in Canada. Of those, over 20 species occur no where else
in the world.
This Project represents a significant step in demonstrating imaging
technology of rare and endangered species not usually seen by most
Canadians. Images are linked to real collections information about
species distributions (mapped) and information about the natural
habitat and ecology. Lesson plans are available for teachers, student
information and general information. The data are freely accessible
so that many different types of questions can be posed and answered.
