 ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
Grades 2 - 3

Activity #1: Newspaper report
Write a report for your school newspaper about an endangered species. Include drawings and a map which shows where the species lives in the Thompson-Okanagan region. Submit the reports to a local newspaper during National Wildlife Week.

Activity #2: Field trip to the Museum
Visit a museum in your community to see animals and birds on display. Check the Species Account Pages for each species to see what your local museum has to offer.

Activity #3: Family field trip
If you're out for a drive in the southern Okanagan, drive north of Osoyoos Lake on Black Sage Road, to the marked viewing site for burrowing owls.

Activity #4: Visit with an owl
Contact Bill Gilroy, Educational coordinator at the Kamloops Wildlife Park, PO Box 698, Kamloops, BC V2C 5L7 and make arrangements to visit with "Scout", the burrowing owl. Telephone: (604) 573-3215. Activity #5: Museum visitors
Invite the Educational programmers from your local museum to come to your school. Examples of programming from the Kelowna Centennial Museum for primary students are "Owls -- Eyes of the Night" (Grades K - 4); "Birds of BC" (K-3); Small animals of BC" (K-3) and "Walk in the Woods" (K-3). Check the Species Account Pages for each species to see what your local museum has to offer.

Activity #6: Owl pellets
Order owl pellets from a scientific distributor and dissect them in the classroom. Use hand lens and microscopes and find out what owls eat!

    Activity #7: Endangered Species bibliography
    Create a bibliography of resources about endangered species. Make certain to include a variety of media formats. Encourage students to review the resources, and publish their reports on the Internet via the Book Nook.

    Activity #8: Classroom Big Books
    Create Big Books about species in the Thompson-Okanagan region if you can't find publications, and add these titles to your bibliography.
