METHOD: Students
do word searches and make a flying paper songbird.
BACKGROUND
Here
are three word searches of varying difficulty. Click on the songbirds
to open them up.

MATERIALS
Crossword puzzles
Fold-up songbird
Pencils
Glue
PROCEDURE
1. Print out the word searches above and make copies for
the class. Students can work on the word searches.
2. Click on the front and back images of the fold-up bird. Print out the
full-sized versions and carefully photocopy them back-to-back. To ensure
that they are photocopied in the proper direction, match the end with
the bird on the FRONT with the similar folds on the BACK. Make copies
for the class.
3. Students can follow the number sequence to make flying paper songbirds.
Here are some additional instructions:
(1) Fold
in half horizontally, then open.
(2) Fold
in half vertically, then open.
(3) Fold
along broken lines so that the outer edge meets the horizontal crease.
(4) Fold
so that the top edge meets the horizontal crease.
(5) Fold
so that the top edge meets the horizontal crease.
(6) Fold
to the original horizontal crease.
(7) On either
side of the horizontal crease, fold along the diagonal lines and glue
to secure.
(8) Fold
along the broken lines, then open.
(9) Cut along
the solid lines and fold the flaps over along the dotted lines.
(10) Flip
the paper over and bring the body of your songbird together. Now you
are ready to watch your songbird fly.
