Family TYRANNIDAE: Tyrant Flycatchers
Hammond's Flycatcher (Empidonax hammondii)
FIELD MARKS
The male and female Hammond's Flycatcher both have greyish-olive upperparts,
greyish tail feathers and a whitish or yellowish belly. Approximate length:
13 cm
HABITAT
This flycatcher prefers mature coniferous or mixed forests of the western
mountains. It can be found high up near the timberline of the mountains
in cooler surroundings.
NESTING
These birds nest in the fork of horizontal branches of conifers such as
Douglas-fir. It nests very high up in the trees at heights of above 7 m.
The female lays 3-4 creamy white eggs that sometimes have reddish-brown
spots.
STATUS
Common and widespread, although it has lost some habitat due to the cutting
of forests.
