Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas)
FIELD MARKS
The Common Yellowthroat is a well-known warbler. The male has a black
mask over his eyes. The rest of his upperparts and his wings and tail
are olive coloured. His throat and breast are bright yellow, and his underparts
are white. The female looks similar but is duller and does not have a
black mask. Approximate length: 11 cm
FOOD
Main diet of insects.
HABITAT
This warbler lives around the reed-beds and willow edges of swamps and
marshes.
NESTING
This is the only warbler that builds its nest in marshes among cattails
and bulrushes. The nest is made of weeds, grass, dead leaves, bark and
fern and is lined with fine grass and hair. The female lays 3-5 cream-coloured
eggs with brown and black spots.
STATUS
Population has severely declined in some regions due to draining of marshes.
Stable in other regions.
