Family PARULIDAE: Wood Warblers
Tennessee Warbler (Vermivora peregrina)
FIELD MARKS
The male Tennessee Warbler has a bluish-grey head with a white eye ring.
The rest of his upperparts are olive-coloured and he has greyish-white underparts
with no wing bars. The female has a yellowish tinge to the line over her
eye and has a more olive coloured head. Approximate length: 12 cm
FOOD
This warbler forages in the outer parts of trees. It can often be seen hanging
upside down to reach an insect.
HABITAT
In British Columbia, the Tennessee Warbler lives in deciduous, coniferous
and mixed forests.
NESTING
Nests are usually built on the ground in bogs or on dry hillsides. Nests
are made of grass stems and lined with dry grass and often moose hair. The
female lays 4-7 white eggs with purple blotches.
