Thursday, February 11
Historic sculpture, basketry, weaving and contemporary artworks are all part of S’abadeb – The Gifts: Pacific Coast Salish Art and Artists, the first comprehensive exhibition of Coast Salish art and culture. What do these objects say about this modern and vital culture and how are today’s Coast Salish artists influenced by the past? Join the discussion with culture elder Tom Sampson; Dr Martha Black, Curator of Ethnology at the Royal BC Museum; and weavers Chief Janice George and Buddy Joseph.
Dr. Martha Black conducts research and presents information on the RBCM’s large First Nations collections. She has curated exhibits on the Heiltsuk, Nuu-chah-nulth, Nisga’a and other First Nations and is the author of two books and many articles on First Nations arts and cultures in this region. As adjunct professor in the Department of History in Art at the University of Victoria, Martha lectures on anthropology, art and museum studies.
