Glaciers in the St. Elias Mountains. David Fraser.
The steep mountains, enormous ice flows and earthquakes all combine to make surging glaciers more common here than anywhere else in the world. These are glaciers that suddenly move forward, sometimes travelling as fast as the length of a football field in a minute. Surging glaciers sometimes block streams, creating lakes, which last until the ice dam eventually breaks, releasing the water that they have stored behind them. Powerful floods can ensue.

These moving rivers of ice affect the landscape tremendously. The glaciers move earth and grind rock; the ice melting in the summer fuels the rivers of the St. Elias Mountains, such as the Tatshenshini and the Alsek. Flowing westward to the ocean, the water, full of sand, gravel and silt, carves its way through these mountains as they grow.
