Sustainablity

The Royal BC Museum has been practicing environmental stewardship for decades and today is recognized as a leader in green initiatives. In partnership with BC Hydro, we have retrofitted our lighting system to improve energy efficiency and received the 2009 BC Hydro Power Smart Excellence Award for this achievement. A comprehensive energy management assessment has been completed and innovative measures to reduce electrical consumption at night.

Visitors to the RBCM may not notice the low flush toilets, motion sensor lighting and solar-powered trash compactors, but this all adds up to help conserve energy.

A state-of-the-art heating and ventilation system (HVAC) in our feature gallery ensures energy efficient climate control to protect our collections and feature exhibitions that we host.

Building on our commitment to being leaders in environmental stewardship, we envision new dramatic BC galleries, improved collections spaces, research spaces and preservation technologies. Using green building technology, the Royal BC Museum will take its place on the world stage as a preeminent and innovative museum and archives that reaches out to the world to share the story of British Columbia.

We are committed to planning this zoning with LEED Gold as a minimum standard and adherence to the principles of Smart Growth BC.
