Mopalia lignosa
(Gould, 1846)

Length: to 80mm
Tegmentum colour: Variable; whitish, yellowish, olive, greyish green or slate-blue and streaked or feathered with purplish to dark brown; some white or creamy specimens have a concentric pattern of blackish zigzag streaks.
Sculpture: Finely pitted all over. Head valve has about 8 narrow, weak, radiating riblets and lateral areas are barely defined by a low diagonal elevation. On the central areas, the pits are arranged in slightly forwardly converging rows, and on the jugum the pits are diamond-shaped.
Girdle: Moderately wide, creamy to light brownish. Sparsely set with long, curved, light brownish setae. These setae are set with tiny spicules, only visible at a high magnification.
Bathymetric range: Intertidal
Geographic range: Sitka, Alaska to Magdalene Bay, Baja California; 23-57°N
