FIELD MARKS
The Chestnut-backed Chickadee is dark brown on its crown and the back of its neck. It has a brownish-black throat, with white on its cheeks and the sides of its neck and a chestnut-coloured back. Its breast and underparts are white with chestnut-coloured sides. Approximate length: 11 cm

FOOD
Chestnut-backed Chickadees are found in small flocks foraging though tree branches searching for insects, seeds and berries. They are commonly found eating at bird feeders in the winter.

HABITAT
The Chestnut-backed Chickadee prefers dense, moist coniferous forests, but can also be found in deciduous trees and thickets.

They make their nests using soft material such as hair or feathers with a base of lichen, bark fibres and moss. They also use bird houses.
