FIELD MARKS
The Chestnut-backed Chickadee is dark brown on its crown and the back
of its neck. It has a brownish-black throat, with white on its cheeks
and the sides of its neck and a chestnut-coloured back. Its breast and
underparts are white with chestnut-coloured sides. Approximate length:
11 cm
FOOD
Chestnut-backed Chickadees are found in small flocks
foraging though tree branches searching for insects, seeds and berries.
They are commonly found eating at bird feeders in the winter.
HABITAT
The Chestnut-backed Chickadee prefers dense, moist coniferous forests,
but can also be found in deciduous trees and thickets.
NESTING
Nests are built in cavities in dead trees or dead parts of living trees.
These chickadees either excavate their own cavity or use woodpecker holes
or natural cavities. They make their nests using soft material such as
hair or feathers with a base of lichen, bark fibres and moss. They also
use bird houses. The female lays 6-7 white eggs that have a few pale brown
spots.
