Royal Visit to Yukon
Visite royale au Yukon

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are shown standing at the back of the “Queen’s Coach” the “Lake Laberge”, while at the White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR) railway station in Whitehorse on Saturday, July 18, 1959. This was the first visit of a reigning monarch to the Yukon, although Prince Philip had visited previously in 1954. This photograph, taken by Eric Wienecke, documents the departure of the royal couple on a short train excursion from Whitehorse to McCrae with a return by car. The public came out to see the Queen in large numbers, and photographs and films of this royal visit have been donated to the Yukon Archives in the intervening years. Of interest, the Queen had to miss the next day’s planned visit to Dawson City and Mayo because of an “illness”, which later was revealed to be morning sickness due to her pregnancy with Prince Andrew, who was born in early 1960.
