Helmcken House
Helmcken House was built by Dr. John Sebastian Helmcken, a surgeon with the Hudson’s Bay Company. It is one of the oldest houses in British Columbia still on its original site. Dr. Helmcken set up house in Victoria when he married the daughter of Governor James Douglas in 1852. He went on to become a statesman and helped negotiate the entry of British Columbia into Canada, as a province. The good doctor’s original 19th century medical kit is among the interesting items on display.

Enjoy live music bry a string quartet on the front patio of the Royal BC Museum as part of the Victoria Summer Music Festival.
The Wisteria String Quartet was formed in the fall of 2016, and is comprised of violinists Amy Toth and Jasmine Mather, violist Jaling Kersen, and cellist Claire Dresselhuis. Since its founding, the young ladies and aspiring musicians of the WSQ have continued to develop a strong musical relationship and dedication to chamber music.

What makes a good story?
In parallel with our upcoming exhibition Family: Bonds and Belonging, campers will explore this question within the museum's collections and from family histories. Fun field trips, engaging guest speakers and behind-the-scenes access will inspire campers to craft and share their own stories.
Ages 7-11
The Royal BC Museum is partnering with The Director's Cut to unleash campers' imagination and creativity this summer.
For this filmmaking camp, campers will team up with other talented filmmakers to take a turn in the director's chair and create a short film. Using the latest in digital technology, hardware, green screens and more, they will learn about scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera angles, shooting techniques and film editing.
Ages 9-14
Join Provincial Carillonneur, Rosemary Laing, for a live recital. Music will feature songs written for the carillon, as well as Canadian folk tunes, and popular songs. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the music from the Native Plant Garden.
You will hear the carillon's automated player from the Inner Harbor area on the hour between 10 am to 5 pm from October to February and between 10 am to 8 pm from March to September.
