The "Middle Grasslands" occur at higher elevations in the southern valleys, particularly in the Nicola Valley. They are dominated by Bluebunch Wheatgrass.

The "Upper Grasslands" are typical of higher plateaus such as the Chilcotin, and are characterized by fescue grasses.

On the steep, south-facing slopes along the Peace River, Slender Wheatgrass and Smith's Wheatgrass characterize special grasslands known as breaks. These are related to the mixed grasslands of the Great Plains and, like them, are a threatened ecosystem. Most of the level grasslands in the Peace River area have been plowed for agriculture.

Grasslands are scattered throughout northern British Columbia, especially on south-facing slopes. Mostly, these are related to the bunchgrass steppes of the southern valleys. Big Sagebrush of the south is replaced by its diminutive northern relative, Pasture Wormwood.
