Scaling cliffsides, keeping dangerously near blasting sites, and occasionally perching along or atop moving trains, photographers did whatever it took to capture the perfect images of the construction of the White Pass railway through Alaska and the Yukon at the end of the 19th century. The White Pass’s own official photographer, H.C. Barley, was once struck by debris from a dynamite blast at the railway building site, destroying his camera and prompting railway president Samuel H. Graves to report to his financiers, “You’ll see that if he lives a few weeks longer you will be likely to get some ‘risky’ pictures.”

Holding tight to both the train and their equipment, two unidentified photographers become the subject for photographer E.J. Hamacher, as the train comes around the bend in this image.

Escalader des flancs de falaise, rester dangereusement près des sites d’explosion et occasionnellement se percher sur le côté ou le toit des trains en mouvement, les photographes faisaient ce qu’il fallait pour capter les images parfaites de la construction du chemin de fer White Pass en Alaska et au Yukon à la fin du 19e siècle. Le photographe du chemin de fer White Pass, H.C. Barley, a déjà été frappé par des débris de dynamitage sur le chantier du chemin de fer qui ont détruit son appareil photo et amenant le président du chemin de fer Samuel H. Graves de rapporter à ses financiers : « Vous verrez que s’il vit quelques semaines de plus, vous aurez fort probablement certaines photos « risquées ».

S’agrippant fermement au train et à leur équipement, deux photographes non identifiés deviennent le sujet du photographe E.J. Hamacher, alors que le train effectue un virage, dans cette photo.
