Laurier Celebration, Montague

After successful petitioning won Murray Harbour a branch of the Prince Edward Island Railway, residents of Montague fought for their own branch as well. Success came in 1904 when construction began, and the line was officially opened in 1906. The Montague Railway Station was soon to be honoured by the arrival of Prime Minster Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who was in town to speak at the Grand Liberal Demonstration hosted by the Young Liberal Association of Charlottetown, and the Queens, Prince and Kings Co. Liberal Association of PEI. This event took place just weeks prior to the 1911 Canadian federal election. An aerial view of the Montague Railway Station shows a crowd standing around the station on the occasion of Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s visit to PEI. A train is visible on the tracks.
