Modernization
Learn more about government’s intention to modernize the museum to protect our historic holdings and provide better access to our collections.
Victoria historian Patrick Dunae will lead a ‘walk talk’ around Heritage Court and the Cultural Precinct. He will describe the area as it was before 1965, when construction began for the new Provincial Archives and Museum. In the 19th century, the property was owned by Sir James Douglas and his family home was located here. Several stately homes were built here in the Edwardian era. Some of the residences became boarding houses, while others (including one shown in the photograph) were converted into government offices.
During our stroll, we’ll look closely at some of the public art and architectural features of the Royal BC Museum complex. The ‘walk talk’ will start from the Netherlands Carillon Tower, near the corner of Belleville Street and Government Street at 2:00 pm.
